About The Bursary

Our History

In January of 2006, the inaugural Algoma Steel Hockey Tournament was held in Sault Ste. Marie consisting of 14 teams and over 200 players. Exclusive to Algoma Steel employees, the players formed teams from many departments within Algoma Steel and each player contributed and collected pledges to raise funds towards the first Bursary. The bursary is awarded through the NOSM University and the Ontario Government matched dollar for dollar the money raised towards the bursary*. The 2006 tournament teams successfully raised proceeds of over $10,000 and a generous corporate donation by Algoma Steel established the 1st Bursary with NOSM. More than 25 teams and $29, 500 pledged in 2018 for 'Bring a Doctor' Bursary. This is all made possible by the continued combined support of Algoma Steel Inc., the community and all the volunteers, including referees, employees family and friends.

How Do We Help Bring A Doctor Home?

Bursaries are awarded based on financial need and qualifying criteria. The 'Bring a Doctor Home' Bursary is awarded by NOSM University with awards going to students with Sault Ste. Marie/Algoma Ontario heritage.

With rising costs for medical students and the ongoing shortage of Medical doctors in Northern Ontario, the bursaries will continue to help alleviate some of the financial burden, while supporting students with heritage from Northern Ontario. Did you know that the average debt carried by a medical student in Ontario is over $20,000 per year for 5years and that after graduating medical students must work as residents for two to seven years before becoming full-fledged physicians. (And this is all after a 4 or 5yr undergraduate program (college or university) which has already burdened many students with accumulated debt. First-year graduated medical residents in Ontario earn approximately $40,000. The cost to service a $100,000 debt is about $14,000 per year, which works out to half of their take-home pay, according to the OMA. It is not whether they will be able to pay it off but rather Ontario needs to ensure tuition and debt does not deter the best and brightest students from attending medical school.***
NOSM University has stationed up to twelve 3rd or 4th year medical students yearly to study and live in Sault Ste. Marie since 2008.
